Cycle counting vs a full physical inventory: which one your company needs

They aren't rivals: a full inventory gives you the complete picture once, and cycle counting keeps that picture current all year. Here's how they differ and how to combine them.

By the Invent team · Panama & the Caribbean

What a full inventory is

A full physical inventory counts everything in a store, warehouse or company at a given moment. It usually requires freezing movements and is done at least once a year, typically at fiscal year-end.

What cycle counting is

Cycle counting splits inventory into parts and counts one part at a time, on a recurring basis: by category, zone, location or velocity. It runs alongside operations and lets you detect and fix errors all year long.

Key differences

How to combine them

The most efficient practice is a full inventory at year-end plus cycle counts during the year, more often on what matters most: high-value, fast-moving or high-shrink items (for example, perishables). That way the year-end count has fewer surprises and goes faster.

How we do it at Invent

We do both: full inventories and cycle count programs by store, category or DC location, with PDT terminals and the same 98% to 100% accuracy standard.

Frequently asked questions

Does cycle counting replace the annual inventory?

For most companies, no: it complements it. The year-end full count still gives the complete number; cycle counts keep accuracy up during the year.

How often are cycle counts done?

It depends on value and velocity: weekly for critical items, monthly or quarterly for the rest.

Can an outside company run the cycle counts?

Yes. Outsourcing them adds independence and frees your staff; Invent builds the calendar with you.
